Making small changes to complex high availability systems can have extreme consequences. When these systems provide critical services to the entire planet – like, say, the Domain Name System – even minor changes must be analyzed very carefully.

That’s why ICANN hired us to perform a study on the security and stability implications of a proposed deployment of dotless domain names, or dotless generic Top Level Domains. Allowing dotless names would allow independent third parties to operate web sites like “http://search/” or “https://bank/”

No dots. Seems simple, right? Our study covers the breadth and scope of the entire Domain Name System, from the technology used to the people consuming the technology.
